ELIZA CARTHY TRIO +
GEORGE SANSOME AND MATT QUINN

Recorded Live at Sidmouth Folk Festival in 2023

Few artists own a stage quite like Eliza Carthy, and her performance with George Sansome and Matt Quinn at Sidmouth Folk Festival 2023 was nothing short of extraordinary. The Eliza Carthy Trio, though a rare live act, delivered a set bursting with energy, musicianship, and the unmistakable fire that makes Carthy one of the most revered figures in British folk music.

Performing in the Ham marquee on a blazing summer afternoon, the trio filled the tent with powerhouse songs, foot-stomping tunes, and intricate harmonies. With Carthy’s commanding stage presence, Sansome’s fluid guitar work, and Quinn’s masterful mandolin and melodeon playing, the music wove together seamlessly, creating an atmosphere thick with excitement. Their intuitive musicianship and natural chemistry made for a performance that felt both fresh and timeless.

A standout moment came with ‘Pecket’s Black Mary/Love Lane’, a tune set that showcased Carthy’s effortless ability to lead while giving space for Sansome and Quinn to shine. The trio played with such intensity that it felt as if they were lifting the roof of the marquee, turning up the heat on an already scorching day.

As a trio that formed, recorded an exceptional album, played too few gigs, and then disappeared all too soon, this performance was a rare treat. The standing ovation at the end proved that this is an act the folk world wants to see more of. Sidmouth 2023 was lucky to have them.
